Frequently Asked Questions

What is CNC Plasma Cutting?

CNC plasma cutting refers to the cutting of metals using a plasma torch controlled from a computer.  Plasma cutters operate by forcing a gas or compressed air at high speeds through a nozzle.  Once an electric arc is introduced to the gas, ionized gas or plasma is created, the fourth state of matter.

What is Plasma?

Plasma is superheated matter – so hot that the electrons are ripped away from the atoms forming an ionized gas. It comprises over 99% of the visible universe. In the night sky, plasma glows in the form of stars, nebulas, and even the auroras that sometimes ripple above the north and south poles. That branch of lightning that cracks the sky is plasma, so are the neon signs along our city streets. And so is our sun, the star that makes life on earth possible.

Plasma is often called “the fourth state of matter,” along with solid, liquid and gas. Just as a liquid will boil, changing into a gas when energy is added, heating a gas will form a plasma – a soup of positively charged particles (ions) and negatively charged particles (electrons).

Because so much of the universe is made of plasma, its behavior and properties are of intense interest to scientists in many disciplines. Importantly, at the temperatures required for the goal of practical fusion energy, all matter is in the form of plasma. Researchers have used the properties of plasma as a charged gas to confine it with magnetic fields and to heat it to temperatures hotter than the core of the sun. Other researchers pursue plasmas for making computer chips, rocket propulsion, cleaning the environment, destroying biological hazards, healing wounds and other exciting applications.

What are layers?

Layers are 2 or more pieces of metal placed on top of one another to give us the ability to paint each layer different colors for a more dramatic look.  These layers are usually held together with a heavy duty 2 way tape, but sometimes they are attached together with some metal rods for a stand off to give it a 3D look

What is a Torch finish?

A Torch finish is when we use a blow torch to heat the metal to bring out the natural coloring of the metal, resulting in the piece turning different colors of blue, brown and black, making each piece with this finish a one of a kind.

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint which is delivered via an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light.

It gives each of our pieces of art a nice durable finish protecting it from rust, and gives our torch and Metalcast painted items protection from scratches, sun fading and smudges.

What is Metalcast Paint?

Metalcast Paint is a brand of translucent paint, which allows the grain of the metal to come through, resulting in a very shiny, vibrant piece of metal.
